Tradition Vs. Truth

"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”
Mark 7:8

Tradition is not the enemy.  

But when tradition replaces truth, something has gone terribly wrong. 

The Pharisees had layered so many man-made rules on top of God's Word that they could no longer see the Word itself.  

Hand washing, cup washing, ritual cleansing; none of it was commanded by God.  

It was cultural habit dressed up as holiness.  

Jesus called it out directly: they were setting aside God's commands to protect their customs. 

This is not just a first-century problem. Any time cultural norms become more authoritative than Scripture, we are in Pharisee territory.  

The question worth asking regularly is: "Am I following God's Word, or am I following what feels familiar?" 

A compass that has been magnetized by something nearby stops pointing north.  

It still looks like a compass. It still functions like one. But it is pointing the wrong direction.  

Tradition without Scripture works the same way.  

It looks like faith, but it leads somewhere else. 

Examine one belief or practice in your life and ask: "Is this rooted in Scripture, or is it just something I have always done?"  

Be honest. Be willing to let God's Word have the final word.

Prayer:

Father, give me a love for Your Word that is stronger than my love for familiarity. Where tradition has replaced truth in my life, show me clearly. I want to follow You, not just what is comfortable. Amen.
