Experts At The Wrong Thing

"You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.”
Mark 7:9 

Jesus was not complimenting them. That word "experts" carries a sharp edge of sarcasm.  

They had mastered the wrong skill entirely. 

The scribes and Pharisees were learned men. They had spent years studying the law. Yet somehow, all that study had taught them to navigate around God's actual commands rather than obey them.  

The Corban reference in Mark 7:11 makes this plain: a man could declare his money "given to God" and then use that declaration to avoid supporting his own parents, directly violating the command to honor father and mother.  

They took something meant for God's glory and turned it into a loophole. 

It is frighteningly easy to use religious language to justify disobedience.  

God's Word does not need to be worked around. It needs to be obeyed. 

Parents who prioritize weekend sports tournaments over their family's consistent gathering for worship may not feel like they are doing anything wrong.  

But over time, the habit forms.  

Church becomes optional, then occasional, then a memory. The child grows up with athletic skills and a distant relationship with God.  

The enemy is patient. He does not need a dramatic exit from faith, just a slow drift. 

Identify one area where you have been rationalizing disobedience. Name it honestly before God today and ask Him to help you choose obedience, even when it costs something. 

Prayer:

God, I do not want to be an expert at avoiding You. Expose anywhere I am using religious words to cover up a disobedient heart. Give me the courage to obey Your Word, fully and without excuses. Amen.
