The Worship God Receives

"But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.”
Mark 7:7 

There is a sobering possibility in this verse: that you can worship God and have it mean nothing.  

Not because God is cruel, but because real worship requires a surrendered heart. 

Jesus makes clear that worship can be rejected.  

The Pharisees were not worshipping a false god. They had the right God. They had the right location. They had centuries of liturgy behind them.  

But they had the wrong hearts, and that made all the difference.  

Their worship was built on the precepts of men rather than the truth of God.  

It was vain, which means purposeless, empty, received by no one. 

Real worship is not triggered by a song that moves you emotionally or by serving in a ministry. Those things can be genuine expressions of worship, but only when the heart is turned toward God.  

Jesus is not asking for better programming or more sincere effort. He is asking for repentance first, and then worship follows. 

You can write a letter to someone, seal it, address it, and drop it in the mail. But if the address is wrong, it never arrives.  

Worship directed by tradition rather than truth, by culture rather than Scripture, never reaches its destination.  

God is not indifferent to how we come to Him. He cares about the heart behind the act. 

Before you worship this week, whether in a service, in prayer, or in private devotion, stop and repent of anything that has been standing between you and God.  

Then worship from that clean place.

Prayer:

Father, I do not want to offer You empty worship. Search my heart, remove what does not belong, and draw me to You in spirit and in truth. May everything I offer You come from a heart that is genuinely Yours. Amen.
