The Heart Of The Matter

"Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man."
Mark 7:14–15

We spend a lot of energy managing appearances.

But God is not impressed with clean hands if the heart behind them is corrupt.

Jesus made a bold claim here. The Pharisees had built an entire system of purity around avoiding the wrong foods and the wrong people.

Jesus dismantled it in a single sentence.

What defiles you does not come from outside. It comes from within.

The heart is the source. Everything you do, say, think, and pursue flows from what lives in your heart.

If your heart is unchecked, no amount of outward religious behavior will fix it.

A man polishes the outside of a car while the engine sits broken under the hood. The car looks impressive in the driveway, but it will not take you anywhere.

That is what external religion without a transformed heart looks like.

Impressive to others. Useless before God.

Ask God today to show you one thing you have been doing externally to appear righteous while neglecting an internal heart issue.

Write it down and bring it honestly before Him.

Prayer:

Father, I confess that I am more comfortable fixing my outward behavior than surrendering my heart to You. Search me. Reveal what needs to change from the inside out. I trust You to do what I cannot do on my own. In Jesus' name, Amen.
