Who Is My Real Family?
“Then His mother and His brothers came, and while standing outside they sent word to Him, calling for Him. And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, ‘Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.’ Answering them, He said, ‘Who are My mother and My brothers?’ And looking around at those who were sitting around Him, He said, ‘Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God, this is My brother, and sister, and mother.’”
Mark 3:31–35
Family relationships can be complicated. Sometimes the people closest to us understand us least. Jesus faced this same challenge when His own family questioned His ministry and even suggested He had lost His mind.
Jesus redefines what it means to be family.
When Jesus declared, "For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother,” this wasn't disrespect toward His earthly family.
It was an invitation to something greater.
Jesus was establishing that spiritual family takes priority over biological family. Blood relation doesn't guarantee a relationship with God.
Even Mary, blessed as she was, needed salvation. She herself called God "my Savior" in Luke 1:47.
If the mother of Jesus needed a Savior, so do we all.
Think about your closest friendships. Often, these relationships are built on shared values, mutual support, and common goals rather than genetics.
The family of God operates the same way.
We're connected not by DNA but by our shared faith in Christ and commitment to following Him.
Examine your relationships. Are you prioritizing your spiritual family?
If you're not yet part of God's family through faith in Christ, today is your opportunity.
If you are a believer, how can you better invest in your brothers and sisters in Christ?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of spiritual family. Help me understand that my identity comes not from my earthly relationships but from my relationship with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
