The Leaven You Do Not See

"Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
Mark 8:15 

Leaven does not make noise. It does not announce itself. It just quietly works its way through the dough until the whole batch is changed.  

That is exactly why Jesus used it as a warning.  

The corrupting influences of pride, tradition, power, and wealth do not storm your heart. They seep in. 

The Pharisees had the leaven of religious tradition.  

They were so committed to how they had always understood Scripture that they could not recognize the God of Scripture standing right in front of them.  

Herod had the leaven of power and money.  

Both kinds of leaven do the same thing: they harden the heart against the gospel. 

And here is the part that should make every churchgoer sit up straight. Jesus was not warning pagans.  

He was warning His disciples.  

The people who had been closest to Him the longest were the ones most in danger of a hardened heart.  

A little religion, a little Jesus, a little churchgoing can actually become a barrier to true transformation if it produces pride instead of humility. 

The antidote is not less church. It is more surrender.  

Godly behavior is only based on God's Word, not our preferences, not our traditions, and not our bank accounts. 

Ask God to reveal any area where pride, tradition, or comfort has started to replace genuine obedience.  

Write it down and bring it to Him in prayer. 

Prayer:

Father, search my heart. Show me the leaven I cannot see in myself. Keep me humble, soft, and surrendered to Your Word rather than my own comfort and tradition. Amen.
