The Cost Worth Paying
"And Jesus was saying to them, 'Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.’”
Mark 9:1
Following Jesus has never been the easy road. It has cost people friendships, careers, and in many parts of the world, their lives.
So why do it?
Jesus does not sugarcoat the call. Right before this verse, He tells the crowd that following Him could mean suffering, loss, and even death.
And then, knowing exactly what they are thinking, He makes a promise: some of them will see the kingdom of God come with power before they die.
He is not recruiting with comfort. He is recruiting with truth.
The reward is real, and it is eternal.
That changes the math entirely. No temporary cost compares to what is waiting on the other side.
Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor and author of Man's Search for Meaning, argued that every decision we make comes down to pursuing pleasure or avoiding pain.
But Jesus calls us to something deeper than that kind of transactional thinking.
He calls us to follow Him because He is worth it, not because it is easy or safe.
Ask yourself honestly: Are you following Jesus because of what you get out of it, or because He is who He says He is?
Write down one cost you have been unwilling to pay and bring it before God today.
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for the times I have treated faith as a transaction. You are worth every cost. Give me the courage to follow You fully, not because it is comfortable, but because You are true. In Jesus' name, Amen.
