The Cost of True Discipleship
“Then His mother and His brothers came, and while standing outside they sent word to Him, calling for Him. And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, ‘Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.’”
Mark 3:31–32
Following Jesus sometimes means disappointing the people we love most. When His family came looking for Him, Jesus faced a choice between family expectations and His divine mission.
His response teaches us about the cost of true discipleship.
Jesus' family thought He had lost His mind. They came to take Him away from His ministry, convinced He was making a mistake.
How difficult it must have been for Jesus to hear that the people who knew Him best misunderstood Him most.
Yet Jesus didn't abandon His calling to please His family. He continued teaching, healing, and proclaiming the Kingdom of God.
He understood that sometimes following God's will means standing alone, even when those closest to you think you're wrong.
This doesn't mean we should be rebellious or disrespectful toward our families. Jesus honored His mother even from the cross, ensuring she would be cared for.
But it does mean that when our earthly relationships conflict with our heavenly calling, we must choose God's will over human approval.
Identify any areas where fear of disappointing others is keeping you from fully following Christ. Pray for wisdom to honor your relationships while remaining faithful to God's calling on your life.
Remember, the approval that matters most is God's.
Prayer:
Father, following You isn't always easy, especially when those I love don't understand. Give me courage to obey You even when it's difficult. Help me love my family well while never compromising my commitment to You. Show me how to be both faithful to You and loving toward those who don't yet understand. In Jesus' name, Amen.
