The Argument Jesus Already Knew About

"What were you discussing on the way? But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest.”
Mark 9:33–34

Jesus never asks a question because He needs information. He asks because He is about to teach you something.

While Jesus was talking about the cross, the disciples were talking about rank.

Who was the greatest? Who deserved the best seat?

It was not just arrogance. Their entire culture had trained them to think this way.

Rabbis assigned seats based on status. Righteousness was performed publicly. Rank was everything.

But Jesus knew what they were discussing before they ever walked through the door. And He used their embarrassing silence as an open door to teach them what greatness actually looks like.

Culture has a way of shaping our theology without us noticing. We absorb its values, dress them in spiritual language, and call it faith. Jesus confronted that confusion head-on.

It is like the parent who already knows which child started the fight. They ask anyway, not to expose, but to open a conversation that leads somewhere better.

Jesus was doing the same thing with His disciples.

Ask yourself honestly: where has culture shaped your definition of success, greatness, or worth more than Scripture has?

Name it. Bring it to God.

Prayer:

Lord, search my heart. Show me where I have let the world define what I am chasing. Correct my thinking with Your truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
