The Upside-Down Kingdom

"If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
Mark 9:35

Jesus did not tell the disciples to stop wanting to be great. He told them they had the wrong definition.

This is the heart of the passage. Jesus sat down, called the twelve close, and said something that flipped their entire worldview: the path to greatness runs through service, not status.

He did not shame their ambition. He redirected it.

God-sized ambition is not wrong. The desire to matter, to leave a mark, to be used by God, those are good longings.

But when we let culture define them, we end up competing instead of serving, climbing instead of kneeling.

True greatness in the kingdom of God looks like a cross. It looks like a servant. It looks like Jesus.

The disciples thought greatness meant being served. Jesus had just told them He was going to be killed for others.

The ultimate act of greatness was not a throne. It was a cross.

Write down your personal definition of greatness. Then write God's definition beside it based on this verse.

Where do they differ? Let that gap be your prayer today.

Prayer:

Jesus, redefine greatness in me. Kill my pride. Help me want what You want and serve the way You serve. In Your name, Amen.
