Holy Monday

"On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry. Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. He said to it, 'May no one ever eat fruit from you again!'"

Mark 11:12-14

Just one day after the celebration of Palm Sunday, Jesus demonstrates a clear intolerance for religious performance that lacks genuine spiritual fruit. For centuries, prophets compared God's people to a fig tree.

A healthy tree produces fruit to benefit others. By cursing the barren tree, Jesus condemned a religious system that looked alive on the outside but offered zero spiritual nourishment to the world.

God gave His people protection and provision so they could bless others. Instead, they became entirely self-centered.

Later that day, Jesus confronted the exact same problem on a larger scale. He entered the temple and drove out the merchants.

Foreigners traveled to the temple to learn about God and draw near to Him. Instead of welcoming these seekers, the religious insiders charged them exorbitant fees.

They used worship as a tool to gain wealth.

They built barriers to God rather than bridges.

These events from Holy Monday demand our attention today. God expects us to produce fruit that nourishes the people around us.

We are called to be a source of life and truth for our neighbors, friends, and coworkers.

Prayer:

Thank You for reminding us that true faith goes beyond outward appearances. Help us to root our lives in You so that we may bear fruit that blesses those around us. Cleanse our hearts of anything that keeps us from loving others fully. Give us the courage and compassion to welcome, serve, and share Your love with everyone we meet. Amen.
