Palm Sunday | The King Who Chose The Cross
“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest!”
- Matthew 21:9
Palm branches waved in the air like flags of victory as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a humble donkey. Children shouted, adults cheered, and for one shining moment, it seemed like the whole world recognized Jesus as King.
But this was no ordinary royal procession. This King was riding toward a cross, not a throne.
The people expected a conquering hero who would overthrow Rome and restore Israel’s glory. Instead, Jesus came as the suffering servant prophesied in Isaiah 53.
Even knowing what was coming, Jesus pressed forward because His mission was not political liberation but spiritual salvation. Joseph of Arimathea understood something the cheering crowd missed. This prominent member of the Sanhedrin was “waiting for the kingdom of God” (Mark 15:43). When the crowds abandoned Jesus, Joseph stepped forward with courage.
He risked his reputation, his position, and his safety to honor the King who chose the cross.
The same Jesus who could have called down twelve legions of angels chose instead to drink the cup of suffering.
He did not come to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many.
That is the kind of King worth following.
That is the kind of love worth trusting.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for being the King who chose the cross over comfort. Forgive me for the times I have wanted You to serve my agenda instead of following Your perfect plan. You are my King, and I choose to follow You wherever You lead. In Your name, Amen.
