The Witnesses You Did Not Expect

"Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.”
Mark 9:4

Moses and Elijah did not show up by accident.

God always has a reason for His details.

Moses represented the Law. Elijah represented the Prophets.

When Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, this scene is that fulfillment made visible.

They stood there as witnesses, validating everything Jesus had said and done.

The last words of the Old Testament in Malachi 4:5–6 promised Elijah would come to restore hearts before the great day of the Lord.

Israel had been waiting. And there he was, standing next to Jesus, pointing to the One who is the fulfillment of every promise.

God never forgets what He said. He always delivers.

Think of a courtroom character witness. You bring in someone whose word carries weight, someone the jury will believe.

Jesus brought Moses and Elijah to the mountaintop. There are no better witnesses in all of Jewish history.

God was not being subtle.

Read one Old Testament passage today and look for how it points to Jesus.

Start with Isaiah 53. Let Scripture interpret Scripture.

Prayer:

Father, thank You that Your Word is a unified story pointing to Your Son. Open my eyes to see Jesus throughout all of Scripture. Deepen my trust in Your promises. In His name, Amen.
