"Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”
Mark 9:37
In first-century culture, a child had no status, no power, and nothing to offer. That is exactly who Jesus chose to make His point.
Jesus reached over and pulled a child into the circle. It was not a warm, sentimental moment for those watching. It was a confrontation.
In their world, a child was the least of the least. No influence, no rank, no reciprocity.
And Jesus said: receive this one, and you receive Me.
He was not saying to become like the child. He was saying to become like Christ toward the child.
Serve the ones who cannot give you anything in return. Love the people who do not improve your status.
Welcome the overlooked, the undervalued, and the forgotten.
How you treat other believers, especially the ones who can do nothing for you, is how you treat Jesus.
Paul captured it perfectly in Philippians 2:3–4: "With humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others."
That is not a suggestion. That is the rhythm of the kingdom.
Think of one person in your life or church community who is easy to overlook.
Reach out to them this week with no agenda. Just serve them.
Prayer:
Father, give me eyes to see the people I tend to pass by. Make me quick to serve and slow to seek status. In Jesus' name, Amen.
