Ordinary People, Extraordinary God

"Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), and James... and John... and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas…"
Mark 3:16-18

Jesus had a habit of giving nicknames to His followers.

These weren't just cute labels - they revealed His intimate knowledge of each person and His vision for who they could become.

Look at this diverse group: Peter the "Rock" who often spoke before thinking, James and John the "Sons of Thunder" with their quick tempers, Thomas the "Twin" who struggled with doubt, and Matthew the former tax collector who had betrayed his own people for Rome.

Yet Jesus saw potential in each of them.

The beauty of this list is that it includes personality types that might clash in normal circumstances.

A political zealot who hated Rome working alongside a tax collector who had served Rome.

Hot-tempered brothers working with a tender-hearted "mama's boy."

Only the gospel could unite such different personalities under one mission.

Jesus didn't need perfect people; He needed available people.

He didn't look for those without flaws; He looked for those willing to be transformed by His grace.

Think about a personality trait you consider a weakness. Ask God to show you how He might use that trait for His kingdom purposes.

Prayer:

Thank You, Jesus, for knowing me completely and still choosing to use me. Help me see my personality and experiences through Your eyes. Transform my weaknesses into strengths for Your glory. Amen.
