Life Over Law
"And He said to them, 'Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?' But they kept silent.”
Mark 3:4
Jesus exposed the Pharisees' twisted priorities with one penetrating question. They had become so obsessed with their religious rules that they had lost sight of God's heart.
For them, protecting their system was more important than helping hurting people.
For Jesus, life was always more important than law.
The Pharisees' silence was deafening. They couldn't answer without condemning themselves.
If they said it was lawful to do good, they would have to admit Jesus was right to heal.
If they said it was unlawful, they would reveal their cold hearts to everyone present.
Their religious system had become an end in itself rather than a means to knowing God.
They were more concerned with appearing righteous than actually being righteous.
They had forgotten that God desires mercy, not sacrifice.
Jesus came to give life, and life abundantly.
He didn't come to burden people with more rules but to free them from the weight of religious performance.
The gospel is good news, not good advice.
Examine your own approach to faith. Are you more concerned with following rules or following Jesus?
Look for one way this week to choose mercy over judgment, grace over law.
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for times when I've been more concerned with religious appearance than Your heart for people. Let my life reflect Your love, not just Your law. Make me a person who brings life, not burden, to everyone I meet. Amen.
