Compassion Over Condemnation

“[Jesus] entered a synagogue again; and a man was there whose hand was withered. And they were watching Him closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Get up and come forward!’ And He said to them, ‘Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?’ But they kept silent. After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might put Him to death.”
Mark 3:1-6

Jesus knew their hearts. He called the man forward, making the moment impossible to ignore. Then He asked the religious leaders a piercing question: "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" Their silence revealed everything.

They cared more about their rules than the hurting man sitting right in front of them.

With righteous anger, Jesus told the man to stretch out his hand. In an instant, it was completely restored. The Pharisees immediately began plotting Jesus' death.

They missed the miracle because they were too busy protecting their system.

How often do we become so focused on our religious traditions that we miss opportunities to show Christ's love?

The Pharisees had built walls around God's law that kept hurting people out instead of drawing them in.

Jesus came to tear down those walls.

Look around your community this week. Who needs the healing touch of Jesus?

Instead of judging their appearance or circumstances, ask God how you can show them His love in practical ways.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, forgive me for times when I've been more concerned about my comfort than Your compassion. Help me see people the way You see them, with eyes of love and mercy. Break down any walls I've built that keep hurting people from experiencing Your grace. Use me to bring healing to someone's withered places today. Amen.
