Finding Your Identity
"Jesus said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.’"
Mark 2:27-28
The Pharisees had found their identity in keeping the Sabbath. They were known as "Sabbath observers," and this distinction set them apart from other nations.
Their identity was wrapped up in their performance, their rule-keeping, their religious reputation.
Jesus shattered this identity crisis with a simple truth: you weren't created to serve the law; you were created to know Me.
As Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus was saying that our identity shouldn't come from what we do but from whose we are.
This is revolutionary. Before Christ, God's people were identified by their allegiance to laws.
Now we're identified by our allegiance to Christ Himself.
We're not defined by our performance but by His perfection.
We're not known by our rule-keeping but by His grace.
Your identity isn't "recovering addict" or "divorced person" or "failure." Your identity isn't even "good Christian" or "faithful church member."
Your identity is "beloved child of God," purchased by the blood of Jesus, declared righteous by His sacrifice.
In Christ, every day is holy because our identity is in the Lord of the Sabbath.
We don't have to perform to be accepted. We're accepted, so now we can serve from love, not fear.
Write down three things that typically define your identity. Cross them out and write "Child of God" over them. Let this truth sink deep into your heart.
Prayer:
Father, thank You that my identity is not based on my performance but on Your love. Help me to live from the security of being Your beloved child rather than striving to earn Your approval. When I'm tempted to find my worth in other things, remind me that I am already complete in Christ. Let this truth transform how I see myself and others. Amen.
