Blame-Shifting And The Human Heart

"That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man."
Mark 7:20

People have always been skilled at locating the source of their problems anywhere but their own heart.

It is human nature to blame something outside of ourselves: our upbringing, our environment, our circumstances, other people.

The Pharisees blamed external contact with unclean things.

People today blame genetics, trauma, or society. None of that is the source Jesus identifies.

He points directly inward.

That does not mean difficult circumstances have no effect. It means that the root of sin is the heart, and the heart is our responsibility before God.

Owning that is the beginning of transformation.

Think about the last time you said or did something you regretted.

Where did it start?

Not with the person who provoked you.

Not with the situation that frustrated you.

It started with what was already living inside you, waiting for a reason to come out.

The next time you find yourself blaming someone else for your reaction, pause and ask: what does this response reveal about my heart?

Use that moment as an invitation to surrender rather than deflect.

Prayer:

God, I confess I am quick to point outward when the real problem is inside me. Give me the humility to own what is mine and the courage to bring it to You. Thank You that Your grace is big enough to handle my honesty. In Jesus' name, Amen.
