When Truth Costs Everything

"For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. For John had been saying to Herod, 'It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.’"
Mark 6:17–18

John the Baptist didn't pick easy targets. He could have preached safe sermons about loving your neighbor or helping the poor. Instead, he looked the most powerful man in the region straight in the eye and called out his sin. 

John understood something we often forget: truth isn't negotiable based on who's listening.  

Whether you're talking to a homeless man or a king, God's Word remains the same.  

The law of God applied to Herod just as much as it applied to anyone else. 

Here's what strikes me about John's courage. He wasn't reckless or foolish. He knew exactly what he was risking.  

Kings don't like being told they're wrong, especially about their personal lives. But John valued God's approval more than human approval.  

He would rather sit in prison with a clear conscience than walk free with a compromised message. 

We live in a culture that tells us to keep our faith private, to avoid making waves. But sometimes love demands that we speak uncomfortable truths.  

When someone we care about is heading toward destruction, staying silent isn't loving, it's cowardly. 

Ask God to show you if there's a truth He's calling you to speak, even if it might cost you something. Remember, your job is to be faithful, not to control the outcome.

Prayer:

Lord, give me John's courage to speak Your truth with love, even when it's difficult. Help me value Your approval above human praise. When I'm tempted to stay silent to avoid conflict, remind me that love sometimes requires difficult conversations. Make me faithful to Your Word, no matter the cost. Amen.
