The Prophet They Overlooked
"Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
Mark 9:11
The scribes were half right. Malachi had predicted Elijah's return before the great day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5). They knew that verse well.
What they missed was the very next verse: Elijah would come to restore hearts through repentance, not to crown a military conqueror.
They were reading the Bible, but they were missing the Bible.
They yanked one verse out of context and built an entire theology around it, ignoring the rest.
Jesus had already told them plainly: John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah.
His ministry? "A baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins" (Mark 1:4). That was the fulfillment.
Repentance is not a popular message, but it is a necessary one.
John preached it boldly. It cost him his life. But his ministry was not undone by his death.
It was validated by it.
Here is the warning for us: it is possible to be familiar with Scripture and still miss what God is saying.
Reading one verse out of context is not the same as knowing the Word.
Context matters. The whole counsel of God matters.
Pick a Bible promise you have been leaning on. Read the surrounding chapter today.
Let the full context deepen your understanding.
Prayer:
God, give me a hunger for Your whole Word, not just the parts that feel comfortable. Correct my blind spots and help me hear what You are actually saying. In Jesus' name, Amen.
