"And the evil spirit answered and said to them, 'I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?' And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”
Acts 19:15–16
There is a difference between knowing the name of Jesus and actually belonging to Him. The sons of Sceva learned that difference the hard way.
Seven men walked into a room trying to cast out a demon using the name of Jesus, and the demon looked right at them and said, "Who are you?"
They got it right theologically. They even specified which Jesus they meant, the one Paul preaches.
But the name carried zero power, because there was no faith behind it and no obedience in front of it.
The demon was not impressed by a name on the lips of people with nothing in their hearts.
Jesus Himself said it plainly in Matthew 7:21: "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter."
Saying the right words is not enough. The name of Jesus carries power when it is joined with genuine faith and real obedience.
Imagine a soldier borrowing a general's name to give orders. If the general never authorized it, those orders carry no weight.
The name of Jesus is not a password you type in and expect results. It is the name of a Person you know, trust, and follow at great personal cost.
Do a personal inventory. Is there an area of your life where you are still living for yourself while claiming the name of Jesus?
Name it honestly before God today. Repentance is the first step toward real power.
Prayer:
Lord, I do not want to carry Your name without carrying Your life. Search me, convict me, and change me. Help my faith to be real, not just rehearsed. In Jesus' name, Amen.
