Made For Rest
"Jesus said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.’"
Mark 2:27
This single verse revolutionized how we understand God's gifts.
The Pharisees believed people existed to serve the Sabbath. Jesus declared the opposite: the Sabbath exists to serve people.
God didn't create the Sabbath because He needed a day off. He created it because He knew we would need rest, reflection, and renewal.
It was a gift wrapped in a commandment, designed to protect us from our own tendency to work ourselves into the ground.
In our hustle culture, we've forgotten this truth. We wear busyness like a badge of honor.
We check emails on vacation, work through lunch, and pride ourselves on never taking a sick day.
We've made ourselves slaves to productivity instead of finding our identity in God's love.
The Sabbath principle isn't just about one day a week. It's about recognizing that our worth doesn't come from our work.
It's about trusting that God is big enough to handle things when we rest.
It's about believing that He cares more about our hearts than our hustle.
Rest isn't laziness; it's trust. It's declaring that God is God and we are not.
Schedule a real Sabbath this week. Turn off the phone, step away from work, and spend time simply being in God's presence.
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for believing that my worth comes from my work. Help me to rest in Your love and trust in Your provision. Teach me the rhythm of work and rest that You designed for my good. Help me to find my identity in being Your child, not in what I accomplish. Amen.
